What are you comfortable with?

Cats.  I relax completely in a feline presence.  Put a cat on my lap, and I could be sitting on a rock and I'd relax completely.  I'm more comfortable in a cats presence than I am in the company of most humans.  Cats are very immediate in their desires- they want to play/eat/be petted NOW.  But that means that once you have fulfilled their desire, they have no further expectation of you.  If you are petting a cat, they are not also reminding you about feeding them later or the need to change the litter box or reminding you of things completely unrelated to the moment- like the research you need to be doing or the fact that you'll need to do laundry sometime this week.  A cat will keep you in the moment.  Indeed, probably most animals will, but I'm a cat person, so I favor their methods of keeping it in the present moment- like sitting on top of anything they don't think you should be doing right now.  Cats keep you present in the moment, and I  find that a very pleasant place to be.

Priestess MJ,
You are so right.  And even if they get under foot it is because they want to be near you.
But I think that there is a magical reason that we like cats.  It is connected with their “purr”.
Often in our lives we try to do things that will please the ones we love.  And sometimes, despite our best efforts, we are not sure if we have been successful or not.  This uncertainty creates a gap in our ego and we can fill it with sadness or anger or feelings of rejection.  Most often, whether we realize it or not, it is just our need for acknowledgment and affection.  We desire both and our psyches need booth.
Enter the cat.
Whether they are stretched out like our friend above, curled tight into a ball on our lap, or rubbing back and forth between our legs, the gentle motor of the “purr” is a clear message of love, satisfaction, and happiness.
Being loved, and being told you are lovable, is “magic.”
And that is a very comfortable place to be!
I love you very much, “purrrrr!”
The Big Kitty,
Your “Papa Bear”
