Nothing scares me like economic injustice. I've been doing reading for my Christian Ethics class, and a number of the readings are about the connection between economic injustice and other forms of injustice, such as race and gender, as well as the obvious one of class. As a warrior of the truth, I do my best to stand against all form of injustice, but there's something about economic injustice that makes me feel helpless. How can I stand against the devastating power of money?
As a teacher, I feel I can tackle the tough subjects with my students. As a Christian youth minister, I feel obligated (and privileged) to follow the example of Jesus as a radical teacher of an alternative vision of society. I can teach my kids about race and gender inequality, homophobia, and eco-justice. But I don't know how to teach them about economic injustice. Economics was a subject that I never grasped particularly well, and it is a particularly sordid and convoluted business in contemporary capitalism. How do I fight, and teach others to fight, something I don't understand? Is this a subject I have to trust to others, who share the desire to fight injustice and have the knowledge to tackle economics? Or do I need to pick-up a book, take a class, and learn more? Both?
At least I know one thing: I'm voting for someone who economic injustice does not privileges. Or at least privileges less.
